Subject: COVID-19 email for researchers

Dear EDI researchers,

As we are all aware, the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread geographically and in many places the number of confirmed cases is increasing. OPM is taking the situation very seriously and therefore, I have been asked to send a note to remind you that under your contract with OPM, your University/organisation has full duty of care (DoC) for any EDI related work, any subcontracts you enter, workshops you organise and logistical arrangements, flight bookings, research trips, etc. As DoC is with you, it is not for us to determine whether activities should go ahead or if they need to be amended in any way. We would, however, be grateful if you share with us your University/organisation’s response to the Corona virus and what precautions you are taking for EDI-related work/research trips.

The situation is fluid and unfortunately we currently do not have any certainty if DFID (the funder of the overall EDI project) will pay for any additional costs associated with the coronavirus response. We need to assume for now that costs will need to be borne by the DoC holder.

For researchers:

  • If you have any travel coming up we recommend that you follow your university/organisation’s official advice related to coronavirus and travel. As mentioned above DoC lies with your university/organisation and you should follow their advice.
  • Before you travel please ensure you check the local travel advisory for the country you are visiting and follow your Government/Foreign Office advice. Where possible book flights and accommodation that can be changed/cancelled with minimal or no fees.
  • Please let us know as soon as possible if you anticipate any immediate delays or complications with continuing your EDI research due to coronavirus.

OPM have set up a COVID-19 Team to monitor the situation as it evolves and where necessary we will provide further updates.

Please let us know if you have any questions about coronavirus in relation to your EDI-funded project.

Many thanks and best wishes,
EDI Team
Ben Klooss, Rachel Smith-Phiri and Liliana Munevar
